Characters are able to sneak, and a visual indicator on the cursor shows how well you can be seen by enemies. A full sun icon indicates you are fully visible, a half-sun denotes partial visibility, and an empty sun means you are completely concealed.
You'll be able to learn a lot more about each character that you encounter, and you'll get the chance to strengthen your bond with them as well.

It also is a video game, and a kind of game where showing off the complexity of the combat system is the point. The issue here is that while the combat system is complex, it’s also unforgiving. If you’re not always using every single spell, item, and bonus action you have to defeat the enemy characters, you’re probably going to lose.
Like in Divinity: Original Sin 2, when deciding your player character, you have two options: you can choose an "Origin character"—a bespoke character with its own fully-authored story from Larian—or you can make an entirely custom character from scratch. While more personalized dialogue choices and story hooks made Divinity OS2's studio-made main characters the better option, Larian said in an AMA on Reddit that in BG3, "custom characters have a much stronger connection to the world and the main arc of the story.

What makes D&D fun, at least in my experience, has very little to do with the campaign, or following all the rules correctly, or the lore of the Forgotten Realms.
The githyanki in particular feature prominently in Baldur's Gate 3, since one of your first companions is a githyanki fighter who was captured by mind flayers. The city of Baldur's Gate will feature of course, as a sprawling open city that Larian showed off not long before launch.
